In past years I always started the year with email etiquette and had students practice emailing me back and forth. As our school has put Chromebooks in every students hands, I've made it student's responsibility to email me when they are gone to check-in with what they've missed. Stressing the importance of email communication either prior to being gone or while students are at home has saved a lot of time on catching kids up when they get back.
