One way gmail could be used in the classroom is to do Google Hangouts with other classrooms to share ideas and experiences with kids from different parts of the state or world. You could invite an "expert" to Google Hangout with your class to reinforce the application of a topic you have been teaching similar to skype. It could also be used to teach/review letter-writing skills in a digital age for older students.
