I have used Gmail, and especially the Labels as I create a Label for each section/period of my classes. I organize all messages sent and received by students in those classes so that I can easily find whether there are questions to what assignments were given or received or more importantly not received. It is a great tool for staying organized. I can see how the creation of Groups could also work in a very similar manner and will perhaps incorporate that in the years to come.
