Gmail with Students

K. Van Dyke
There is no doubt that communication is critical to education. I have always used gmail as a means to communication essential information to parents and coworkers. As a 5th grade teacher who is departmentalized, I see many different groups of students and have never had the need to use email with students.  In part because whatever I had to communicate with them I could easily do in the classroom and because our district had disabled gmail for 5th graders. However, during the COVID-19 epidemic, it became more critical to communicate using another means.  For me, I utilized gmail and some of the special feature to communicate.  Forming groups so that I could email certain batches of students or parents was an especially helpful feature.  This created some up front work but it saved a lot of time and was more efficient in the long run.
