I think that Google Chat would be a good tool to allow students to communicate with each other regarding an ongoing assignment, should they have questions or are working on a group project. Teachers could also collaborate using Chat allowing students in separate school districts to work on a large assignment and compare data with one another. For example, students could share weather data locally, state-wide, nationally, or even world-wide using Google Chat.
