I have found using Gmail with my students a crucial way of communicating before but even more so in the past year, having to teach online.
Gmail has allowed me to quickly contact all of my students, but classes and courses, but also as individuals.
I have been in conversations not only with students, but with their parents/guardians, administrators and counselors from different school buildings, as well as student support educators and staff.
I feel that it is also important to encourage appropriate communication by my students, to remind them that writing an email should be appropriate and professional.
All in all, I am unsure how I would have been able to stay in contact with students had it not been for gmail.
