Looks like the Communities that I would like to join are set to "private". I did create a private community and would be interested in researching more as trying it out for students in class. I like the possibility of allowing posts with links and images that would be set to private for student classroom use only.
It was interesting to find that "circles" are being phased out in Google +. I spent some time trying to add members to some circles (I had created in the past and never used) and was unable to do so.
