HS Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS)

Rebecca Barnes
As a high school FCS teacher, I work to incorporate financial literacy into all of my courses.  I teach several child development related courses and a course titled Real World Living.  In my CD courses we evaluate several financial topics, such as: medical and hospital expense of prenatal appointments and labor and delivery costs, costs of illnesses in children, toys, books, strollers, cribs, diapers and wipes, etc.  We spend time on the cost of daycare and the importance of being on time for pick-up and drop-off.  We also look at the expenses as a child grows up, including the possible cost of a post-secondary education.  However, I do not cover the topic of savings for children and life insurance.  This is something I look forward to learning about and learning how to best incorporate the financial literacy into my CD classes.

I also teach a very valuable course titled Real World Living.  This is a course of juniors and seniors, so students who are really thinking about what they want to do after high school.  A great portion of our semester is spent on finances.  As of right now, I have a plethora of guest speakers from our community come in to talk about savings and checking accounts, FAFSA, insurance, taxes, loans and credit scores.  However, I would like to make this more applicable to their lives rather than just listening to a guest speaker.  I'd like to have more project based learning going on in this course.
