3-LS3-1 Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms.
SEP - Analyzing and Interpreting Data
Students will spend time analyzing and interpreting data to look for patterns and form explanations. They will look at pictures of traits that certain animals have in common, specifically beaks. Then they will look determine how those difference help the birds survive.
DCI - Variation of Traits
Students will discover that different beaks have different functions. Those inherited traits are what helps the bird survive. We will also discuss other inherited traits of birds, such as songbirds, wing and body type, migration) and gain understanding of how all those traits are necessary for survival.
CCC - Patterns
After gaining familiarity with birds, students will look at patterns in inherited traits in other plants and animals.
**After teaching this standard for a few years, I've found students have a much easier time understanding inherited traits in animals than in plants. I think there are a couple of reasons for that. First, third graders are much more interested in animals than they are in plants, so their level of engagement is much higher when working with something they enjoy more. Second, I think it is harder for them to understand how plants reproduce and pass along traits.
