I have experienced several instances where students have reported to me that another student sent them a text or posted something on social media that was disrespectful, hateful, or just inappropriate. These students felt as though they had been violated, especially if the message was directly about them. This spiraled into other students getting hurt or feeling bad in some way, as things that are digital spread quickly. I think this could have been handled differently if students understood what to do when they see or experience inappropriate digital usage. Instead of spreading it and making the problem worse, they should use ways to stop the spread.
