Being a mom of teenagers and being tuned in to their accounts, I have witnessed many tweets and facebook posts that are definitely innapropriate.(Fortunately, not from my kids) I think kids (and adults) feel free to say things because they aren't face to face. Needless, to say the strength of their written words have just as much hurt, and probably more because it is public, than if they had spoken them.
Also, I have seen numerous instances in which a text message or an email have been misinterpreted and caused havoc. You can't see facial expression or hear sarcasm or feel concern through words.
