Inappropriate Usage of Digital Media

Karina Krall
I have seen so many examples of the inappropriate usage of digital media that it's hard to choose what to relay here. I'm sure others are in the same boat. Here are just a few examples:
1.) I was teaching high school English when texting, emailing and instant messaging were all becoming the rage. I was highly dismayed to learn that everything students had previously been taught in regard to proper grammar, mechanics and basic capitalization had so easily and quickly flown out the window. Papers I assigned in class were coming in as all one paragraph with no periods and no capital letters except, or course, acronyms I didn't understand. To this day, the lowercase letter "I" is my biggest pet peeve when used as a pronoun. Students need to learn there is a time and place for this type of digital communication, and the time and place is not in a school writing assignment. They shouldn't bring what they consider proper digital communication into the wrong areas; this will eventually hurt them in a professional work environment if continued.
2.) I have been privy to many inappropriate comments and photos posted on Facebook and other social media, although I don't have an account. People always seem to want to drag you into their angst or drama. I just don't want to be a part of that. I always ask those complaining about posts of others to examine their own posts. Are they doing the same kind of things to others? Are they respectful of other people's privacy? Do unto others....
3.) I have known other teachers who have friended students or even recently graduated students on Facebook, and they have been called to task by parents and administration for their own inappropriate posts. We must learn to educate by example. It is never wise to just friend everybody, especially students. There are better, more professional ways to communicate with them.
