I had a colleague once who received an email from a student that started off with the salutation, "Hey Girl!!!". That single, two-worded, opening had so much wrong with it. The first and most obvious was the total lack of decorum of a student addressing teacher. Secondly, that the student was male and addressing a female in this fashion was totally inappropriate in a formal context. Even in an informal context, there would have to be a mutual understanding and level of trust between both parties for this to be acceptable in my opinion.
Needless to say, it was upsetting to my colleague. Doubly so in that the issue was going to need to be addressed that this manner of communication is not acceptable and needs to be changed going forward.
