Inappropriate Use Digital Media by Eric Berntson

Eric Berntson
I firmly believe using social media as a means of expressing emotion is misguided as it short changes what I think is the most important part of any emotional exchange which is in person emotional feedback.   There is no "hugging it out" when two feuding parties are not in the same room.   In person confrontation isn't fun by any means but in the long run I believe it's the only effective way to resolve the differences we have.

That being said I think their are only a fes remedies to this problem.  One is to have social media companies mandated to have gatekeepers installed to keep online discussions from overheating.  Another is to essentially start teaching effective communication as part of the curriculum in K-12 with an emphasis on the limitations of digital media as a way to communicate.   Last I think we need to emphasize how permanent our online communication is.  It's so easy to think that once we hit send that the words disappear but we are reminded to often how untrue that is.   I would like ( in a perfect world ) to have a disclaimer appear EVERY time someone is about to send an email or post on social media words to the effect that this communication will be available for someone else to read for eternity.

None of these remedies is likely to find favor with the tech giants but our success as a society depends on it.

I like the idea of teaching effective communication as part of a K-12 Curriculum.  Digital media is here to stay so we might as well find a way to positively incorporate it into the live's of students.
