There are several teachers in my building (high school) who have some of their students as “friends” on Facebook. Most of them do practice good citizenship and have avoided any issues. One teacher, apparently, forgot who was on her friends list and posted some pictures of her at a party and looking like she was having a pretty good time. Some of the students were talking about it and soon the teacher had the terms “alcoholic” and “party girl” associated with her. The principal met with the teacher and addressed the issue with the rest of the faculty regarding being more responsible with our social media accounts. He did not forbid us from “friending” students, but since this was the first time it had occurred in the building no reprimand was executed. But we were told that any future occurrences would result in a reprimand.
Digital media (social media) is still very young and most of us have realized that once it is out there, it is out there.
My rule is that I never post anything I would be embarrassed of if my mom saw it. Now, I understand that there are some moms out there who need to re-evaluate some of their morals. I get it. But that is my rule. My mom was a saint. 😊
