Inappropriate Use Digital Media

Kathryn Evans
Recently a friend of mine who has a female teenager at home shared that the teenager was receiving facebook messages from a male acquaintance of the same age. The male in this situation was calling her inappropriate names, telling her she was ugly, her clothes were too tight, etc. This resulted in her being upset. She felt like she was the one doing something wrong by wearing what she previously felt good in and somehow being an annoyance just by existing. This interaction also, understandably, made her parents upset that somebody was speaking to their daughter this way and concerned about what this interaction could do to her feelings about herself.
In order to limit interactions like this I feel like parents need to play a more active role in looking in to their child's social media interactions. Who can my child message? Who is able to contact my child? What is being said to my child or what is my child saying to other's during their online interactions?

That's awful! I'm old and so happy I didn't have to experience such things growing up.
