Inappropriate Use Digital Media

Lisa Streif
I was greatly disturbed when it was discovered that a student at my school had sent an inappropriate photo of herself to her boyfriend, and when they broke up, he shared it with his friends, showed it around the locker room, etc. It was discovered because one of the boys who had been in the locker room reported it to the principal. The students do not realize (and don't seem to care) that doing this makes them guilty of possession and/or distribution of pornography. Those boys will never look at that female student the same way. What scares me is that I wonder if they really 'see' her at all, or other girls, as real people with feelings, or just as 2D images, attachments to be collected and shown to friends, then deleted when they are no longer wanted. The saddest thing is, it seems like that is how the girl saw herself--no big deal that her picture was forwarded and shared all over the school. She did not understand why it was wrong to dehumanize herself that way. If she has that little respect for herself, why should anyone else respect her? The students do not see their use of the internet and other digital media as something that comes with great responsibility and something that can be abused, it is just another way of communicating to others without having to see any of the consequences.
