Inappropriate Use - Richard Dow

rdow
I've received a lot of spam, and scam emails.  The scams have come from old hacked passwords from other businesses and other "secure" websites.  The spam emails and ads are just unreal.  It is to the point where I refuse to give our my email at a checkout.  It seems like many places where you shop in person won't complete a transaction without an email address.  If you give them your real email address you get 50 new emails every day from the same store.  I'm a bit of a DIY'er,  and my inbox is full of Menards ads, and tool company ads, etc.
At least with old junk mail, they had to pay postage to send out all of their junk.  At what point does the spam overload become unethical, or considered harassment?
With digital media, we need to reinforce to our youth and students that there is no such thing as privacy.  Anything you send out there can be Screenshot, saved, photoshopped, resent, etc.  Digital tools can be very helpful, but a person needs to be a defensive user, just like we teach students to be defensive drivers when they learn to drive a car.

i have many of the same experiences that you mentioned here.  It is even not safe to answer the phone today. You have to make sure not to say the word "yes" because it can be taped and used by someone later.
