A few years ago we had a group of students sending messages that said "go kill yourself" or "gky" to other students. Phones were confiscated and an investigation led to several students serving suspensions. We also had an all-school assembly where the principal addressed the legal and ethical implications of harassing others.
Too often teenagers don't think about the effect their actions may have on others. And unlike a rude comment made in person, digital media lasts forever and can be shared to others.
