Inappropriate Use of Digital Media - Zach Smith

Zach Smith
When I was in middle school, Facebook was the big social media tool that most students were using at the time. I remember one of my classmates getting picked on and bullied by a group of students who made a Facebook post about here and a group of them kept commenting on it and adding to the post. Eventually it was seen or showed to parents who let our administration know, and then the parents of each student involved was contacted. I remember it being quite a big deal and quite a lot of people ended up having consequences from being involved in the situation, even if they did not start it.

The post made made my friend feel very upset, sad, betrayed, and they were in a dark place for quite some time following it. I think they were more embarrassed that so many people saw it publicly and that it was posted for enjoyment even with the intent of hurting or making someone else feel bad.

I think the obvious answer to what could have been done differently would have been for the person who posted it to simply not post anything or spread rumors or make fun of anyone at all in the first place, especially in a public way as they did. As for the other people or their friends that added fuel to the fire and continued it through commenting and reposting things, not getting involved with things like this, knowing that being involved even at the slightest could get you in serious trouble. If you think at all it might be the wrong thing to do, let someone know rather than jumping into the fire of the situation.
