I use social media for a good deal of activist group communication. Too many serious social media conversations get hijacked by trolls. If it’s in my control, I will not engage with a troll-block and delete. Not worth the headache!
Private groups usually have guidelines, and mods / admins may keep a close eye on the page. I have left interesting groups if it gets too sloppy or nasty—there is a lot to choose from out there!
Seems there is a new scam daily. You DO NOT KNOW if a social media friend has been hacked. I personally do a double verification. Fake friend requests constantly. I always ask a “personal” question, or their requests get deleted.
Nabble was shut down after the spammers got hold of it. Tighter access controls and user verifications may have slowed that down!
