As other posters have said, it's often difficult to properly convey sensitive information via e-mail or text. Because these forms of communication often lack all the information that we convey with tone and body-language when talking in person, a poorly or unfortunately worded e-mail can often give the wrong impression.
Another thing that came to mind is when members of a listserv or group e-mail inappropriately spam the group with irrelevant subject matter -- file that under the umbrella of knowing how to properly communicate with a given audience.
