Inappropriate Use of Digital Media

Lori Bolick
Just yesterday our school had a 2-hour late start due to icy roads. The text announcing the late start came at 6:56, which is rather late. One of my colleagues had an early morning practice and was upset to get the text after she had come to school. Naturally, she was concerned about her students venturing our on the icy roads, but all but one student received the news before leaving home.

Because she was upset, she decided to post on FaceBook her frustration of the lateness of the 2-hour late call citing the slickness of the roads and her early morning practice.

Another colleague and I talked to her about her post and asked if she would consider deleting it. It was a negative reference to the administration of the district and was not professional in any way. I told her that I was sure that if she had issues with the timing of the call, that the admin would much rather talk to her face to face.

She deleted the post.

A case of publicly sharing your feelings at the height of your emotions and not thinking through to the audience and their reactions (i.e. parents jumping onto the post and making negative comments about the call being so late)
