While observing in a school, students were working on creating presentations on their laptops. Students were allowed to use their school provided gmail accounts and use gmail messenger to send group members messages about their project. Unfortunately, it seemed that students tried to use google messenger more for inappropriate use than for their project. Students sent unrelated links, had conversations about other people, and avoided classwork. In my own classroom, I would not allow gmail messenger if students abused the privilege. It is difficult to monitor on 30 computers.
