The are countless examples of inappropriate use of digital media and it occurs with students, teachers, and parents. One example that stands out for me: I was looking at Facebook one evening and read a post a parent shared, it was an article about what women over the age of 40 shouldn't wear to the ball field to watch their child play ball. For some reason I decided to read the article, and the comments other parents had made. I couldn't believe what I was reading, these moms basically bullying other parents about what they wear to the ball park. It really was disgusting. The next day at school I received a phone call from an angry mom about all the bullying going on in middle school and we needed to address it and make it stop. I asked if her child was getting bullied, could she give me examples, etc. She wouldn't provide me with any information. By now I am frustrated, and needed to find a to address this parent. So I talked about the article on Facebook from the night before, I knew she had read the article (she had commented!).
I expressed that there is so much talk in the media and society about bullying and sometimes parents see everything as bullying and they expect the schools to make it stop. I continued by saying it is difficult to make it stop when our adults are doing the same thing and this is what their children are hearing and seeing. I wasn't sure how it would end but I felt it needed to be addressed, this mom got quiet on the phone and finally said, "you know that is a good point, I know the article you are talking about and it is adult bullying." Maybe I got lucky on her reaction, but I do have several parents that are trying to be more positive.
It just amazes me that people think they can say(type) whatever they want.
