Inappropriate Use of Digital Media

Jane Trotter
I strongly support opening the digital world to our students and not blocking social media.  With such openness, though, the importance of strong digital citizenship is daunting.  I observe many Facebook teacher friends who "friend" students.  This alarms me because one cannot control what friends of friends post which may reflect poorly on a teachers character.  So, as in "real life", we must choose our friends wisely!  (I wonder how many more times I can squeeze the word "friend" into this post?!)

I also caution Twitter teachers to create an account that is solely for professional use.  Don't mix private and professional on Twitter.  Remember, the point of Twitter is crowdsourcing and crowd sharing even when you don't know who that crowd may be.
