Share a time when you or someone you know was the recipient of an inappropriate use of digital media or when you might have used digital media in an inappropriate manner. How did this make you or others feel? What might have been done differently?
I was the recipient of a student-created false TikTok account when the platform was first introduced. The student created the account to bash other students in her grade in my name. Fortunately, the other students knew me well enough (40-yr veteran) to realize that I didn't have TikTok and would ethically NEVER bash a student online or otherwise. The other students in the class alerted me of this account and who they suspected. After an investigation by the principal, the account was removed.
I feel especially fortunate that I had already established great relationships with my students (I did not know the student who set up the account and she chose my name at random) and that they alerted me to the situation almost immediately. The students who were victimized by the account felt horrible for only a short while, but that would have made me feel absolutely rotten if they believed it to be me. I can't image how horrible it is to be bullied online and I am positive it happens in schools every day.
