Inappropriate Use of digital media

Someone I know read an account of something on social media about themselves. The account (story) was inaccurate. Also another person replied to this account and it was a hurtful response. So here is an example of two people sharing something hurtful in basically one post.  What might have been done differently? either post the story accurately or not at all. And the hurtful response was not necessary.
