There are two things that come to mind. The first, is that some communication should be face to face or in a phone conversation. Some communication should not be done by text or email. The second, is attempts to scam us with clever attempts to obtain financial information to engage in fraudulent activity. Both violate the ethical standards that most of us would consider appropriate.
In the first instance, some conversations rely on more than the printed word. Nonverbal communication and tone are very important components of many interactions.
Attempts by online scammers to defraud by misrepresenting themselves as a trusted entity is not only unethical, but is a crime. However, it is difficult to prosecute and the victims are rarely able to be made whole.
Both interactions can best be prevented or reduced through awareness and an understanding of some of the limitations of digital communication.
