Inappropriate use-don't let it catch you off guard!

John Kvapil
An administrator was speaking to a large group of 7-12th grade students about an important topic. Towards the end of the demonstration and speech, he decided to show a video unrelated to the the topic of the presentation. The video was humorous in nature, which also unfortunately contained a bit of inappropriate content and language.

Staff was uncomfortable as well as some of the students. After everything was all over and done with, it was clear the video was not viewed in advance which the administrator admitted to and acknowledged the error.

Fortunately, it was not so inappropriate that any negative consequences occurred.

What I learned from this:
1. Always watch the whole thing.
2. Make sure it's educational, relevant and legal.
3. Communicate with others about what you might want to show. Sometimes the video has already been shown. If the video is really perfect for your curriculum but contain questionable material, ask your administrators. There might be a form you can use to get parental permission to show it.
