My 10-year-old son received an ipad for Christmas last year and wanted to be able to text his friends. They have these group text messages that they are always sending. They are not always very nice to one another through these messages. We have had many conversations with our son about how people don't know that you are joking around when you are typing a message and to only send messages that are kind and encouraging. We do keep a close eye on the messages that our son sends and so he knows if he sends something inappropriate, he will lose his ipad. I have questioned some of the other parents in this text message group and they do not check what is being sent and fully trust their children. It frustrates me that other parents wouldn't want to monitor this too.
I also agree with what some other members of this group have typed in regards to who you friend on social media. I will not "friend" a student who is still attending school on social media. I also will not "friend" my student's parents simply because I have their child in my class. I keep all of my posts very positive or I simply don't post at all.
