In the classroom, I have had students try to take my picture or record me without my knowledge. I felt very upset that my privacy was being violated. I spoke to the students about personal boundaries and respect. Because this is a constant part of teenagers culture, many students do not feel this is anything outside the norm. Many believe that they should be allowed to take a picture of anyone at anytime. My hope with any learning opportunity is to get the students to really think about the situation. The two questions I have found to help to get students to think are "What are planning on doing with that picture?" and "Why do you want a picture of me?" This allows students an opportunity to process how they are impacting others and hopefully build empathy.
