One day, I noticed a group of students looking at one of their smartphones, laughing about something they were watching. I went around the group so I could see -- and it appeared to be of a girl crying and screaming. It made me feel sick that these kids would find humor at another's expense. I startled them with my question, asking what they were laughing about. As usual, "nothing." I asked if they all knew the girl in the video. Only one of three of them acted somewhat embarrassed, and he answered that they knew the girl but she was okay. I tried to start a discussion, but the students rebuffed me and split up. I wish I could have engaged them more effectively.
