I think we all know intuitively what our limit is for appropriate, and when that line has been crossed by other teachers, parents or students. My sister-in-law teaches middle school, all her students want to friend her on FB, she keeps a separate account for her students, I thought that was a clever way of dealing with it.
It is impossible for school districts to monitor all social media for students. Some companies, Facebook and Twitter, have been doing some monitoring of posts, but these are mostly for politics.
