I currently use facebook and have settings to only my friends view can view my information. I am careful about what I post. Posts must be positive. I only friend people I personally know.
I have 2 teenage children and realize facebook has become more widely used by my generation than theirs. They prefer instagram and snapchat. My daughter has set up a snapchat account for me but I rarely use it...only really use it check on what she is posting. In talking with my students, the thing they often forget is a picture is worth a thousand words. They don't think twice about posting pictures of themselves and other that give more information than some care to share. They also don't think twice about others in their pictures may not what those pictures shared.
