1.National Art  Standards Being Addressed
VA:Cr2.llla :Experiment, plan, and make multiple works of art and design that explore a personally meaningful theme, idea, or concept.

2.Content of Lesson
Students learn various methods to character design such as mash ups and use it to design and draw their own characters.

3. Learning objectives:
I can use the mash up method to create a unique character.
I can come up with three characters for a short story and make a character reference sheet showing the front, side, back and three facial expressions for each of them.
4. Rational
Characters are the lifeblood of a story and coming up with a good character design is essential to the visual medium.

5. Materials and Resources
-Paper
-Pencil
-computer (with internet)

6.Procedures
Mash ups: Go over some pictures via google slides showcasing examples of character design through different mediums (movies, animation, comics, video games etc). Show tips on what makes a good character design (ex 1:having a variety of different body types and recognizable silhouettes)(ex 2. Basing it after real people) and (ex 3 a character mash up.)

A character mash up is taking various parts of three or more characters you like and assembling them in different ways to make a unique character. Show a demonstration on the board using various characters suggested by the class to make a improv character mash up. Pass out supplies and have students try out making three mash ups featuring two different human characters and one combination of any character or animal.

Part 2 Character sheets: A character sheet is a reference for artists to look back on to make sure the character they draw over and over again is consistent in details and style. Show different character sheet examples and parts that are necessary for assignment. Character sheet must have a character shown from the front, side and back. There needs to be three head drawings showing different expressions. After they have completed each sheet, they need to fill out a character development sheet that helps the student put in details about the character’s personality and backstory. Staple the development sheet to the back of the character sheet when finished. This project may take more than one class period.
Ending lesson: Allow students to share their process. Collect all work completed so far and save for future project.
