Labels in Gmail

I am a classroom teacher who uses Gmail to communicate frequently with parents, administration, and colleagues.  For me, the use of labels is very intriguing as I am very organized, however, have felt my email has been unorganized in the past.  I want to be able to access emails to groups/individuals more quickly.  Efficiency is my goal for the new school year.
