Learning versus Figuring it out

To me, learning about science is more of a rote memorization skill. Vocabulary, history, laws, and remember important facts. Reminds me of all the skills a person would need in order to be successful at playing trivia. Figuring it out makes me think, here's your problem, here are the supplies/tools you have readily available, now go! It's more of a process and depending on the skill set you possess figuring it out may be easy or next to impossible depending on the person.

Figuring it out represents the most recent research in teaching science curricula today.

I like how the video states instead of starting the lesson off with the idea, begin with the phenomena. This guides students into what they are trying to build and understand. Build in science definitions and knowledge as you are working towards the common goal. It makes science more meaningful to students. This is everything we have been discussing in inquiry-based science strategies. Having the teacher take a step back and let students use their skills and thought processes versus waiting for the teacher to guide them as they simply follow along.
