Learning vs Doing

Teacher 3
I really appreciated the video which discussed what phenomena is. I liked his definition that phenomena is what is happening in the world that we need science to explain. I can see that what we are learning is how teaching science has changed from learning given facts and applying it to phenomena, to starting with a phenomena which raises questions and then answer the questions with exploration.

We have been learning how figuring out answers themselves is more meaningful for the students. Learning about gravity is not as fun as figuring out gravity.  The author says "Phenomena are observable occurrences. Students need to use the occurrence to help generate the science questions or design problems that drive learning."

The general idea is that students learn better when they have ownership in what they learn. Allowing them to guide the discussions and investigations where they figure things out will encourage students to keep learning about the phenomena. They will then apply what they learned to other phenomena.
