Lesson Title: Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

Anchor Standard #7. Perceive and analyze artistic work.
Language Arts will be integrated into this lesson.
Materials:
Starry Night painting
White paper
Paint
Paint brushes
Graphic organizer
Laptop
Activity: This lesson will be completed over one week.
Day 1:
-Students will begin by reading an article (
http://www.ducksters.com/biography/artists/vincent_van_gogh.php) and watching a video (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv8TANh8djI) about Van Gogh.
-Students will pair up and fill out a graphic organizer about the things they learned about Van Gogh. They will have a 10 minute time limit.
-Students will then share out whole group.
Day 2:
-Students will view Starry Night by Van Gogh and write down what they observe about the painting.
-We will have a class discussion about what students observed. (Students should notice how the sky is created using swirls, discuss colors, what is painted, ie. stars, homes, etc.)
-Students will then be instructed they will be creating their own version of Starry Night using some of what Van Gogh has created and adding their own creativity to the painting.
-Students will need to recreate Starry Night but they can create their own version of what is below the stars.
-Students will have time to create an idea of how they would like their picture to look using pencils.
Day 3 & 4:
-Students will have time to work on their painting. Students will be reminded to create the same looking sky with their own version of the town or what they have decided to paint.
-Once students are done they are to write a paragraph (3 to 5 sentences) explaining what they added to the painting and why.
Day 5:
-Students will present their writing and drawing to the class.
-While others present students will write down their favorite version of Starry Night and why.
Assessment:
-Students will be assessed on their ability to write a paragraph using complete sentences, correct capitalization, and punctuation.
-Students will receive points 0, 5, or 10 based on effort put into the painting.
