Merydith Marshall (Form Past 1: Art Concepts and Terminology)

Merydith Marshall
Although a lot of the information was review for myself, there were several new concepts that I learned. When I began going to college I took a couple introductory art classes, so the 5 elements are art were not new to me. I thought that most of the terminology used was easy to determine. For example, horizontal lines are just like watching a sunset on the "horizon". Overall, I found that color, line, and texture were easy for me to recall.

Shape and space were new learning for me. I was unaware that "form" is a three dimensional object. I teach middle school math, so I figured I would have heard this before. I had also heard of positive and negative space, but did not know the exact meaning. Lastly, figure-group relationship was completely new. However, once learning the terms foreground, middle ground, and background, it was very much common sense!

I am currently teaching 7th grade math. As I went through the module I thought of some ways to incorporate these concepts to my teaching. For example, we do a lot with rulers. This would be great time to introduce students to the terminology that goes with lines. Also talking about shape and form and using the correct terminology when teaching volume, surface area, area, perimeter, etc.
