Merydith Marshall (Lesson Plan for Creativity)

Merydith Marshall
Name: Merydith Marshall

Grade Level: 4-7

Title of Lesson: Angles in Art

Objectives/Outcomes:
-Students will discover that artists use angles to create art
-Students will learn the correlation between art and math
-Students will actively measure angles in a piece of artwork (Wassily Kandinsky, Composition VIII)
-Students will create their own piece of artwork that includes different angles

National Art Standards (grade varies):
-VA:Re9.1.6a: Develop and apply relevant criteria to evaluate a work of art
-VA:Cr1.2.7a: Develop criteria to guide making a work of art or design to meet an identified goal
-VA.Cr2.1.7a: Demonstrate persistence in developing skills with various materials, methods, and approaches in creating works of art or design

Math Standards (grade varies):
-CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.A.2: Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions.
-CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.B.5: Use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles
-CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.1: Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines.

Vocabulary:
-Angle (obtuse, acute, straight, right)
-Supplementary, complementary, vertical, adjacent
-Protractor

Materials /Resources Needed:
-PowerPoint/Google Slide reviewing information about previously learned topic on angles (vocab review)
-Image to display: Wassily Kandinsky, Composition VIII
-12 x 18 paper
-Colored pencils, crayon, etc.
-Protractors/ruler

Technology Used: None (if possible, could create their own artwork on “Angles Palm OS program” on device)

Lesson Procedures:
1. Review angle terms with PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation
2. Display image: Wassily Kandinsky, Composition VIII
3. Ask students to look at image and find 3 things they notice, 3 things they wonder about the artwork
4. Discuss their findings
5. Ask students to identify angles they see in the artwork (record on the board/piece of paper for all to see)
6. Go over assignment

(Students will create their own piece of artwork incorporating angles, must have at least 2 types of each angle discussed (acute, obtuse, etc.) BE CREATIVE)

7. Share artwork and angles they included

Assessment/Evaluation: Students artwork will be collected or shared if time allows. Assessed on the criteria given for assignment (having at least 2 types of each angle, creativity, color, etc.)
