I am currently a substitute teacher, so I see my role with financial literacy as being a role model for my children and at times the classrooms I substitute teach in. With the advances in technology, students do not have to balance a checkbook or rely on cash. Most young people use debit or credit cards. It is crucial that we model responsible behavior and discuss the responsible use of credit and debit cards. Students also have the ability to monitor accounts through online banking. Modeling how to set a budget and save money needs to start at a young age. It is important to have these conversations with our children from a young age into adult hood. Being financially responsible sets a better path for the future.
