Norms & Responsibilities - Evelyn Marolf

I believe everyone has a right to feel safe when they are online – this could include being safe from harassment and bullying, to being sent advertisements or images that are unwanted, to express their beliefs (provided it doesn’t spread hate or untrue information). It is important for people to have a voice but it is also important for comments/content to be flagged if it is spreading false information.

I believe one of the required user responsibilities of the digital world should be that all users are respectful of one another. It is so much easier to say hurtful things in the digital world because you are further removed from the people who may be hurt or impacted by the comments or photos that are posted. It is important for users to be aware of how their choices might impact others and the influence it could have on the larger context of the community. In a school setting this is also imperative because the digital world has become so ingrained in our day to day lives that it is impossible to separate the online world and the “real world” – everything that happens online can impact what happens social in school as well.

I completely agree.  Every child and adult has the right to be able to use technology and to feel safe.  In our world today, there are so many if’s and dangers.  Learning about Digital Citizenship and applying it makes one more aware of how to be safe.  There are so many unknowns and just clicking on something that you think is what you are looking for or researching and finding out that it is not a can be rough and frustrating.  Learning what .edu, .org mean when researching is vital.  I agree with your thoughts.
