In our digital world, I believe that people should have their freedom of speech, but also need to be taught along the way about appropriate use. Students need to learn at home and at school appropriate ways to use technology. It seems that some people will say anything on the internet - no consideration of others. Students need to be taught and it should be a norm that this is not appropriate. Bullying has definitely increased because of social media.
As educators, we also need to realize that not all students have ill intentions with their online world. Most students are using the internet for what it's original intention is. Educating students along the way about appropriate ways to research and interact online will hopefully decrease their want to use the digital world for negativity.
