Norms and Responsibilities by Eric Berntson

Eric Berntson
The number one right in an ideal digital world is to have a gatekeeper on social media sites to shut down comments which are posted for purposes of degrading another person.   I don't like every opinion I see but I find to many responses are posted simply to shut down anyone who doesn't share the opinion of the author.
I see it happening in both liberal and conservative realms.   The second right I would like to see is to have authors  be forced to cite sources for their posts.  This would add a lot of work to people posting on social media but I believe it would bring a level of responsibility and ownership which would force everyone to engage more of their critical thinking.

Due to the lack of direct human interaction, which I feel is so important to creating a space for everyone to share with some degree of candor and safety, we are ultimately left without our most important safeguard to enforcing the norms and responsibilities that allow us to function with each other.  Without all the verbal and visual cues that make direct contact so engaging I believe we can't treat our online interaction with the same criteria as our interpersonal interaction.
