I want to think a little smaller than the 'digital world' writ large. I worry about student privacy in the age of 1-to-1 laptops. Since we have this now, we are somewhat 'expected' to make use of the possibilities the tech provides. Our school gives students chromebooks (low powered laptop computers premised on using online platforms or extensions / additions to the operating system so that tasks are performed online rather than through discrete pieces of software) and we teachers are constantly asking them to add extensions.
THe thing is, extension always want to look at your data. I asked tech people at our school about this - was there a list of extensions that we believed wouldn't make bad use of the data, was there a permission process before we allowed companies to have their data, did we have standards about how data could be used? - and didn't get much for answers.
The thing is, as a teacher I don't want to have kids opting out if I need tehm to use a nifty new extension or platform to do a project. That's a complication I don't need. But, I do think students should have choices about how their data is used and by whom.
