In the physical school setting we teach, model, and reteach social expectations. I think of the internet in the same way. We, as educators, have a responsibility to teach, model, and reteach expectations we have for our students online. I think that all people have a right to use the internet, but like the short video from the tutorial stated--we don't just give a 16 year old keys to a car and say here you go. There has to be a teaching piece. I don't want to see kids go out into the real world after school and be denied a job because of their social media. We prepare them academically, but we need to prepare them to live in our current reality that what they post online stays with them.
Now, I don't think that this should be the sole responsibility of teachers/schools. We need to partner with parents and the community to help teach these expectations. Maybe we need to provide education for parents. My school does not do this but, in thinking, it would be a great thing to provide to the community.
