Norms and Responsibilities

Kathleen Hovick
Citizens should have the right to state/share their beliefs using digital media.  However, their rights to express themselves should not infringe on other people's rights.  For example, students feeling safe, bullying others, harassment, sharing inappropriate pictures of others, etc.

Laws exists to protect citizens in online communications and when they are not online.  Students who violate laws can face serious consequences.  Ethics is a difficult area for students as they are still learning and developing their sense of ethics.  One phrase I have heard used for students is "if you wouldn't share it with your grandma, then you probably shouldn't share it".   This does give young students one guideline to assist them in making good choices.

Students also haven't developed the maturity to fully understand the consequences of their actions.  This is an area where educating students about appropriate vs inappropriate online behavior will help them in thinking of consequences before they post.

Plagiarism is a major issue with students as "copy and paste" is so easy to do.  Learning to properly cite sources is an important skill that should be taught in schools.
