Norms and Responsibilities

benjamin.varner
One of the biggest norms that has been established in the online world from as long as I can remember is that of privacy.  Your information is for you to share at your liberty and anything you withhold is at your prerogative.  This has allowed for users (for the most part) to post their thoughts and opinions without fear of consequence.  Is some ways it has allowed people to communicate how they truly feel, which has come to be both a blessing and a curse.

Even though anonymity is normalized in the online world, I still think we have the responsibility to act as if we're not.  If you wouldn't communicate a certain way in the physical world then it is not appropriate in the digital world.  I feel that as connected we are as a society, it is important to understand the digital/physical worlds have blended together, and actions should come with consequences in both.  If people and students should felt more accountable for their choices online, I think we could avoid a lot of negative outcomes.
